A hand-colored steel engraving created as an illustration for Charles Ball's "The History of the Indian Mutiny", volume III, The London Printing & Publishing Company. Beneath this combat image is the title of the composition in block letters followed by, "The 60th Rifles were ordered to conceal themselves as it was getting dusk, and the 'retire' was sounded. The Sepoys thinking that we had actually fallen back came rapidly, when about 20 yards distant they were received by a tremendous volley, which compelled them to retreat with great loss." On the lower margin, "THE LONDON PRINTING AND PUBLISHING COMPANY LIMITED." Set in a custom double linen-covered mat under glass and an attractive gilded/burl-finished wooden frame. This engraving has not been examined outside the frame. Minor wear to the frame, which post-dates the print. Mats and glass are excellent. Slight stains to the engraving.
