European, Medieval, ca. 13th century CE. A very special gold ring comprised of 93% gold (equivalent to 22K+) with a barbed-quatrefoil shaped face that is incised with three saints and inscription, with a faceted shank. The quatrefoil shape is found in traditional Christian symbolism. Perhaps the most famous works of art employing the barbed quatrefoil are Andrea Pisano's bronze panels on the south doors of the Baptistery in Florence (1330–1336), Lorenzo Ghiberti's bronze panels of the north doors of the Baptistery in Florence, Filippo Brunelleschi's competition entry for the same doors depicting The Sacrifice of Isaac) in addition to "Head of an Angel" by Piero della Francesca. Size: quatrefoil face/table measures .625" L x .625" W (1.6 cm x 1.6 cm); opening measures .875" in diameter (2.2 cm); US ring size ~ 11. Total weight: 11.2 grams
