Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A fine silver ring with broad shoulders, a recessed ovoid bezel, and a thin but sturdy band. An ovoid carnelian intaglio of warn red-orange hues is set within the bezel and bears an incised depiction of an abstract zoomorphic creature, perhaps a recumbent deer or antelope, laying next to a small shrub. A gorgeous and wearable example of ancient jewelry from the Roman Empire! Size (ring): 0.875" W x 0.725" H (2.2 cm x 1.8 cm); size (intaglio): 0.425" L x 0.3" W (1.1 cm x 0.8 cm); total weight: 7.6 grams; US ring size 4.
