Title: Barnum's Own Story for the Boys and Girls of America
Author: P. T. Barnum - Phineas Taylor Barnum was an American showman, politician and businessman remembered for promoting celebrated hoaxes and for founding the Barnum & Bailey Circus (1871-2017). Although Barnum was also an author, publisher, philanthropist, and for some time a politician, he said of himself, "I am a showman by profession...and all the gilding shall make nothing else of me," and his personal aim was "to put money in his own coffers." Barnum is widely credited with coining the adage, "There's a sucker born every minute," though no evidence has been found of him saying this.
Publisher: R. S. Peale & Co.
City: Chicago
Year: 1891
Binding Style: Hardcover
Pagination: 514 pages

Book Details: This 1891 edition of "Barnum's Own Story for the Boys and Girls of America" is bound by red cloth-covered boards with the title emblazoned in gilt, silver, and black lettering amidst an intricate illustration on the front cover. The text features numerous illustrations, several of which are in color.

P.T. Barnum, the consummate American showman, lost no opportunity to admire his own achievements as demonstrated by the full title of this text: "Barnum's Own Story for the Boys and Girls of America. Natural History from a New Standpoint, Presenting a Complete and Thorough Study of the Nature, Habits and Characteristics of the Beasts, Birds and Reptiles of the Earth Together with the Story of Their Capture in Their Native Wilds, Combining Science, Narrative and Adventure, the Result of the Author's Life-long Experience and Study, with a Full Account of His Famous Expedition into Central Africa in Search of Wild Animals."
Condition / Notes: This decoratively bound antique title displays some indications of age and wear including shelfwear, rubbing and mild soiling. There are some slight cracks to the inside of the binding in several places though the book remains whole with all of its pages intact. The initials of a previous owner are stamped on the front free endpaper. Moderate age toning is visible on the pages though the text and illustrations remain clear and bright throughout the book.
