Description
A very rare old wooden mask from the Kumu peoples, Congo / DRC, Africa. KUMU masks, called "nsembu" or "ibole", which appear in paired dances that contrast male and female roles during initiations into the secret "nkunda" divination society. This archaic example features a primitive style with painted red, white and black areas and accented with linear decoration. The mask interior and edges all show heavy wear and handling, suggesting ceremonial use over many many years. A display stand can be included for an additional $34.00. The mask itself measures 15.5 inches tall x 9 inches wide.
