Description
A very rare old wooden mask from the Kumu peoples, Congo / DRC, Africa. KUMU masks, called \"nsembu\" or \"ibole\", which appear in paired dances that contrast male and female roles during initiations into the secret \"nkunda\" divination society. Carved wood with an archaic and primitive style, accented with linear designs and kaolin clay pigment. The mask measures 13 x 7.25 inches.
