Flagler, Henry M. Rockefeller, John D. [Standard Oil]. Stock Certificate for Standard Oil Trust, Signed by John D. Rockefeller, Henry Flagler, and Jabez Bostwick. New York. Aug. 22, 1882. Certificate measures 15.75” x 7.75”. Light soiling and wear, embossed endorsement stamps not affecting signatures. Cancellation ink stamp on front, sale information completed in manuscript on verso.
Engraved stock certificate for 100 shares in Standard Oil Trust, endorsed by John D. Rockefeller as President of the company, Henry M. Flagler as Secretary, and Jabez A. Bostwick as Treasurer. The certificate (no. A165) is made out to Louis Henry Severance, oilman, philanthropist, and founding member of the Standard Oil Trust.
John D. Rockefeller and Henry Flagler joined forces to found an oil refining company in Cleveland in 1865. This company would eventually become Standard Oil Company of Ohio in 1870. In 1882, Standard Oil Company and its affiliates combined to form Standard Oil Trust. The present certificate is, therefore, an early iteration of the company’s stock. In 1885 the company officially relocated its headquarters to New York City, where it flourished until 1911, when it was broken up in accordance with newly-passed anti-trust laws.
