Pre-Columbian, Mayan Territories, Maya, Classic to Early Post-Classic Period, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A fine group of four knapped chert flint "sculptures" of the type commonly referred to as eccentric. Abstract in appearance, they are representative of three different types of animals. First, a beige-hued stone resembles a quadruped mammal, possibly a bear or jaguar, with four large and evenly-spaced legs. Second, a chalky-white stone with frontal prongs, side legs, and a curved tail represents a scorpion. Lastly, the russet-hued and second chalky-white stone represent bird-like figures with a crest, beak, and tail. A wonderful ensemble of late Mayan flints! Size of largest flint: 2.9" L (7.4 cm).
