Newark, New Jersey. Signed by Theodore Runyon, Mayor of Newark and Civil War Brigadore General, This is a cut cancelled sheet of (2) $50.00, (1) $100.00 and (1) $200.00 Civil War Bounty Bonds from the Mayor and Common Council of the City of Newark. Bonds issued a mere 3 weeks prior to the end of the American Civil War and a month to the day of the death of President Abraham Lincoln. Each certificate is signed by the then Mayor of Newark, NJ, Theodore Runyon (October 29, 1822 – January 27, 1896) a United States politician, diplomat, and American Civil War Brigadier General in the New Jersey Militia, serving with the Union Army at the Battle of First Bull Run, first president of the Manufacturers' National Bank of Newark, chancellor of New Jersey for 14 years and, between 1893 and 1896, envoy and later ambassador to Germany. Crisp VF condition and cut cancelled, rare and attractive.
