Pre-Columbian, Chancay culture, Peru, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A fabulous bi-chrome earthenware egg-shape bodied effigy vessel, the figure's head depicted on the neck of the vessel with bulging coffee-bean shaped eyes, a protruding upturned nose, large circular earspools, a chocolate brown mask/tattoos over his eyes, and a beard or tattoos adorning his mouth - all beneath a conical crown/headdress adorned by ridged vertical appliques just beneath the mouth of the vessel. The figure sits with upraised legs (applied to the lower section of the vessel) and holds a small offering kero (cup) in both hands extending from long applied, coil-made arms in front of his chest. The figure dons a 'beaded' pectoral comprised of meticulously incised circular motifs. A striking example of this type - skillfully handbuilt, modeled, and painted in a rich chocolate brown pigment on a creamy white ground. Size: 8" L x 7.5" W x 13" H (20.3 cm x 19 cm x 33 cm)
