Item Details
Description
This is a slap stick, a noise clapper used by a circus clown. It is made from two tapered boards, joined together at the handle, with a small wedge between them to make them spread slightly apart at the ends. One board is padded at the end and covered with canvas (of the kind used to make carnival knockdowns). This padded end is used to strike another clown. Two metal pieces between the boards strike to make a very loud noise with just a slight blow. This is a well-used example with a great look. The wood is painted a deep orange with a rich, slightly crazed surface. The handle is wrapped in electrical tape, with the end of the handle uncovered and unpainted, showing a rich patina and smoothness from wear. The canvas is darkened with age, sturdy and intact, with some very slight fraying on one edge. It is 25" long by 2 3/4" wide by 2 1/4" high at the larger end, probably from the 1940's or 50's.
