Signed in pencil. Serigraph. A few tiny tears to the uncolored corners and small pin holes, otherwise excellent condition. 23" x 23". Est. $500-800. Ship: $45
Corita was an artist, educator and advocate for social justice. At age 18 she entered the religious order Immaculate Heart of Mary, eventually teaching in and then heading up the art department at Immaculate Heart College. Her work evolved from figurative and religious to incorporating advertising images and slogans, popular song lyrics, biblical verses, and literature. Throughout the ‘60s, her work became increasingly political, urging viewers to consider poverty, racism, and injustice. In 1968 she left the order and moved to Boston. At the time of her death, she had created almost 800 serigraph editions, thousands of watercolors. Her work can be found important museum collection throughout the United States. In 1966, Kent was named one of nine “Women of the Year by The Los Angeles Times. Kent made the cover of Newsweek magazine in Dec. 1967, “The Nun: Going Modern. In Feb. 2020, CNN called Kent, “The Catholic nun who made joyous politically charged pop art.
