Great map of the West, naming Gadsden Territory as a separate region before it’s named Arizona. Map was issued shortly after the formation of Arizona, Nevada and Wyoming, each of which is named, but the borders not properly illustrated. The region recently acquired from Mexico is also called Pimeria Alta. The road system in California is noteworthy as being much more detailed than most contemporary atlas maps of the region. Many Indian place names shown. Excellent detail in the Southwest and Salt Lake regions as well as in California. In Arizona, Tuscon is also given an alternate spelling of Tueson. Gadsden Ter. is also called Pimeria Alta, and occupies the area south of the Gila River. Great detail of Indian tribes, topography, towns, forts, and roads, with particularly good detail throughout California. An inset at bottom shows Washington, Oregon and Idaho. Map is based on a similar map published by Weekly Dispatch, but with numerous updates. Published by Cassell, Petter, and Galpin in Cassell’s General Atlas of the 1860s. Modern hand color. Just two very light and small spots. 12 x 17.
