Description
Outstanding Glazed Redware Jar with Rope-Twist Handles and Profuse Manganese Decoration, attributed to David Mandeville, Circleville, NY, circa 1835, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, flared rim, and delicately-applied rope-twist handles. Decorated around the body with a distinctive brushed manganese drape design featuring ram's-horn scrollwork and a hanging tassel or foliate device. Shoulder decorated with three brushed X's on each side. Surface covered in a clear lead glaze. Excellent color with striking brushwork. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchase by the consignor decades ago. Wear to rim. A thin crack across underside, which forms a 4 3/4" restored Y on side of jar. This restoration includes a restored base chip. Some typical wear to rim. A 1 1/2" restored section to interior of rim, not visible on exterior. Wear to rim. Very minor handle wear. H 7 7/8".
