Description
17th/18th century European tapestry, 116" x 116". Depicting a mythological scene where an Hermes or Mercury god with wings on his feet and helmut withholds an apple from a kneeling figure with a staff. Handmade. Probably from Brussels or another part of Belgium.
Condition
There are a few tears in the upper right hand area, visible in the photos.Restoration to the left hand lower corner, in the banner area, and the banner area lower right up to the upper right(the banner being the 7 inch panel of woven decorative material that frames the entire tapestry). There is a distinct color change in the banner beginning in the lower right corner and extending up the right side, suggesting one whole side of the banner was rewoven. This has nothing to do with the tapestry itself, just the rectangular material that frames the whole textile.
