Description
Outstanding Glazed Redware Jar with Manganese X Decoration, attributed to David Mandeville, Circleville, NY, circa 1835, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, flared rim, and delicately-applied rope-twist handles. Decorated around the body with large scrolled X's in manganese slip and around the shoulder with smaller X's. Diagonal slash decoration to rim. Surface covered in a clear lead glaze. Wonderful folk art slipwork and stylish form. Includes a lead-glazed redware lid on Northeastern U.S. origin, possibly CT. Very nice condition with some wear to top edge of rim, light wear to one handle, minor wear to opposite handle, some minor flecks of wear to body, and a base chip. Lid in excellent condition with a minor chip to knob. H (excluding lid) 8 3/4".
