Description
Scarce Shenandoah Valley Copper-Glazed Redware Flowerpot, attributed to S. Bell & Sons, Strasburg, VA, circa 1890, ovoid pot with flared rim and attached saucer, the surface dipped in a whitish slip and covered in a bright-green lead-and-copper glaze set against a dark ground. The glaze treatment on this flowerpot is probably the Strasburg Bells' attempt at replicating a distinctive neon-copper glaze perfected by John Bell in Waynesboro, PA, occasionally found on his flowerpots, pitchers, and at least one vase. Pieces of base broken and reglued. Additional chips to rim of saucer and wear to base of saucer. A filled flake to underside. Wear to rim of flowerpot. H 4 7/8".
