Description
Very Rare Shenandoah Valley Glazed Redware Pitcher, Stamped "SOLOMON BELL / STRASBURG / Va", circa 1875, stylishly-potted, ovoid pitcher with flared base, very tall collar, and molded vine-form handle, the surface decorated with a mottled lead-and-manganese glaze over a straw-colored ground, accented with heavy brown flecking throughout. Impressed with Solomon Bell maker's mark at shoulder. Unusual glaze and form, the distinctive, tall-collared shape being closely-related to the work of fellow Strasburg potter, William H. Lehew. One of a small number of signed Solomon Bell redware pitchers known. Handle broken into sections, with restoration along junctures. Two large restored flakes to exterior of rim, not visible on interior. Some small restored flakes to body. H 7 1/2".
