Central Africa, Cameroon, Grasslands region, Widekum people, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A large, hand-carved wooden mask meant to be worn over the face instead of atop one's head. The visage is comprised of almond shaped eyes, ovoid ears, a prominent, triangular nose, an open mouth with bared jagged teeth, and a high-curved brow line, with two sets of stylized scarification squares on the cheeks. An adorable quadruped animal stands atop the mask, its head defined by perky ears and a rounded face, with dozens of impressed spots displayed across its body. Colored in a dark-brown pigment, this is a fabulous mask replete with character and charm! Size: 8.5" W x 16.5" H (21.6 cm x 41.9 cm).

Age-commensurate surface wear, small nicks to facial details, zoomorphic figure, and peripheries, fading and chips to pigmentation, and one small hole in top of head, otherwise very good. Light earthen deposits throughout.
