The Chokwe complex refers to a number of related tribes living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia, and Angola. These cultures are matrilineal and express the power of women through female figures. This example quite possibly portrays a young wife with a mortar and pestle preparing food. This becomes a further reference to the life giving power of women in this culture. Chokwe standing figure The treatment of the eyes, nose, the coiffure and body suggest that this might well be from the Chokwe complex.
