Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. Skillfully carved from a single piece of white marble with lovely grey inclusions, a rectangular pillar with the head of a goddess at the upper end. She faces forward with her attractive wavy coiffure parted at the center and swept back along the contours of her head and interrupted by what appears to be a wreath or diadem. The goddess' elegant, oval face is sensitively modeled so as to present a naturalistic visage with a rounded forehead, large and generously lidded almond-shaped eyes, a fine browline that arches gracefully and merges with the bridge of her nose, a soft rounded chin, and full, bow-shaped, slightly-parted lips.
