Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A gorgeous, miniature marble head of a female boasting idealized features that suggest she may be Venus (Greek Aphrodite) - the Roman goddess of love and beauty. Crowned by a wreath of roses, her wavy coiffure is gracefully centrally parted and pulled back into a neat bun, framing her sweet, heart-shaped visage with generously-lidded eyes, a naturalistic nose, and bow-shaped lips. Miniature sculptures like this example would have served as a votive in a household shrine. Size: 1.3" L x 0.9" W x 1.5" H (3.3 cm x 2.3 cm x 3.8 cm)

Provenance: private Abilene, Kansas, USA collection; ex-Drs. Harry and Helen Bakwin (b. 1894 - d. 1973), New York, New York, USA
