Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th Dynasty, ca. 664 to 525 BCE. A seafoam-green faience amulet of Tawaret, the ancient Egyptian goddess of child birthing and protector of women, children, and the weak. Tawaret is a composite goddess with features of a lioness, crocodile, but primarily hippopotamus; all greatly feared but immensely respected animals in Egyptian beliefs. She is depicted here in a striding pose, with arms at her sides and her gaze affixed in a forward direction. Laterally drilled through her back, this piece would have been used to fashion a necklace or other jewelry accessory. Lucite stand included. Size: 0.55" L x 0.375" W x 1.75" H (1.4 cm x 1 cm x 4.4 cm); 2.25" H (5.7 cm) on stand.

Surface wear commensurate with age and use, minor loss to foot and facial features, and small pitting holes throughout the surface. Earthen encrustation and mineral build-up in recessed details.
