Description
Byzantine Empire, Phocas, 602 to 610 CE, type of 603 CE. Constantinople mint. Obverse: ONFOCAS - PERP AVI, bearded bust facing, earrings, globe cruciger in right hand. Reverse: VICTORI AVGGI, in exergue, CONOB, Angel standing facing, globe cruciger in left hand, long stag in right. Phocas enjoyed good relations with Rome, his recognition of the primacy of the pope in matters of religion won him high praise from Pope Gregory I. A column honoring Phocas still stands in the Roman Forum. Hahn Vol 2, pl 29, #5; D.O. 1d. Size: 0.9" W (2.3 cm); 4.6 grams
