Description
Near East/Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, reign of Constans II, ca. 641 to 688 CE. Gold solidus. Obverse: crowned, draped and beardless bust of Constans II facing, holding globus cruciger in his right hand. Reverse: VICTORIA AVG S / CONOBS Cross potent on base and three steps. Constans II was the son of Constantine III. Under Constans, the Byzantines completely withdrew from Egypt in 642 CE. In 663 Constans visited Rome for twelve days, thus being the first emperor to set foot in Rome in nearly 200 years and was received with great honor by Pope Vitalian. DOC 3 var. (unlisted officina).
