Description
Near East/Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, reign of Constantine IV, ca. 668 to 685 CE. Gold solidus. Obverse: facing, cuirassed bust, helmeted head slightly turned r., holding shield with his l. hand, spear over r. shoulder with his r. hand. Reverse:  VICTORA AVGYI, in exergue, CONOB Cross potent on base and three steps. Constantine IV was the eldest son of Constans II, and was named co-emperor by his father in 654 CE. Constantine IV was given the responsibility of managing the affairs of Constantinople during his father’s extended visit in Italy. Size: 0.75" W (1.9 cm); 4.2 grams
