Description
Near East/Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, reign of Philippicus, ca. 711 to 713 CE. Constantinople Mint. Gold. Obverse: facing bust with short beard, wearing crown and loros, and holding globe cruciger. Reverse: VICTORIA AVGUS, cross potent, in exergue below, CONOB. Philippicus' given name Vardan, and was born in Armenia. His brief reign was marked by his quarrels with the papacy and his ineffectiveness in defending the empire from Bulgar and Arab invaders. Sear 1452. D.O. 6, B.M.C 8. Size: 0.65" W (1.7 cm); 1.5 grams
