Description
Near East/Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, Valens, 364 to 378 CE, Antioch Mint. Gold solidus. Obverse: DN VALENS - PER F AVG, diademed, draped and cuirassed bust to right. Reverse: GLORIA ROMANORVM, Roma and Constantinopolis, with right foot on prow and holding sceptre in left hand, enthroned facing, holding between them a shield inscribed VOT X MVLT XX in four lines; Christogram above, ANOBA in exergue. Valens was the younger brother of Valentinian I, who assumed the throne upon the death of the emperor Jovian. Valens was also an Arian Christian who persecuted Catholics while rarely interfering with the pagans. RIC 16d, Cohen 7. Size: 0.8" W (2 cm); 4.5 grams
