Description
Near East/Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, Justinian II, 705 to 711 CE, 2nd reign. Constantinople Obverse: facing bust of Christ Pantokrator; cross behind. Reverse: crowned facing bust of Justinian, wearing beard and loros, holding globus cruciger inscribed PAX and cross potent set upon three steps. The first reign of Justinian II saw him as an ambitious and passionate emperor who wanted to restore the Roman Empire to its former glory. His second reign was marked by unsuccessful warfare against Bulgaria and the Caliphate, and by cruel suppression of opposition at home. Ex. Lacam Collection, pl LVI #45, this coin; MIB 1. SB 1413.
