Description
Origin: Greek / Apulian culture, 4th century B.C..
Height 49,5 cm.
A very nice and rare Apulian terracotta red – figure volute krater. The central image area depicts a naiskos, formed by two columns of Ionian style. An old warrior in a himation with a rod stands inside the naiskos, surrounded by a shield, greave and helmet. A nude youth and a female figure presenting offerings outside of the naiskos. The old warrior, the naiskos and the meander running below are highlighted in white. On the neck four swan heads revolving. The neck image depicts, also highlighted in white, a seated Eros with his head turned backwards, surrounded by tendrils and garlands. The volutes in form of white and tone color masks. On the back a large portrait of a so-called “lady of fashionâ€, facing to the left with an opulent hair decoration, necklace and earrings. Below black meander. The neck image depicts palmettes.
Condition report: professionally reassembled from few fragments. Without any filling.
Provenance: Galerie Runge, Upper Austria. Acquired at an art fair in Munich. Thence Austrian private collection.
