Description
1672 English Literature & History Education Philosophy Henry Wotton Reliquiae Wottonianae
“An ambassador is an honest man sent abroad to lie and intrigue for the benefit of his country.” – Henry Wotton
Henry Wotton was not known for his writings, in fact, his portfolio is quite sparse compared to his contemporaries. He is regarded for only two major works – “Elements of Architecture” and this work, “Reliquiae Wottonianae.” Of the 19 poems printed in this book, only fifteen are actually by Wotton. But two those pieces have solidified themselves as some of the best-known poems in English:•“On his Mistris, the Queen of Bohemia”
•“The Character of a Happy Life”
A fine, 1672 third edition of “Reliquiae Wottonianae” – an edition that includes printed material not found in either of the earlier two editions. Wotton, mostly known as a diplomat and a poet, was a staunch activist for education. Among the contents of this book is “A philosophical survey of education or moral architecture” as well as ‘A Panegyric to King Charles,” and a series of curious letters to Edmund Bacon.
