Description
1887 Cossacks Leo Tolstoy RUSSIAN Literature Philosophy Caucasian War English
Leo Tolstoy’s ‘The Cossacks’ was first published in Russia in 1863. It tells the tale of Cossack life and people and a Russian aristocrat who falls in love with a Cossack girl. 'The Cossacks’ is a short novel, somewhat autobiographical in nature, about the experiences of Olenin, the young Russian aristocrat, who decides to join the army and finds himself in a Cossack village during the Caucasian War (1817-1864). This is arguably Tolstoy's first masterpiece as it explores themes later developed in ‘War and Peace’ and 'Anna Karenina': contrasted with the sophisticated culture of Russian urbane society.
A rare 1887 English translation published in New York.
