Description
Pre-Columbian, Mexico and northern Central America, Mayan Territories, Late Classic, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A beautifully-carved, cream-colored shell formed into three panels that together form a human figure in profile. The figure wears a horned headdress, with horns often being an indication of shamanism. These shell panels were most likely inlaid into a piece of wood that rotted away long ago. Size: 2.2" W x 3.2" H (5.6 cm x 8.1 cm); 6.95" H (17.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-J. Leff Collection - a famous collector from Uniontown, Pennsylvania; Pieces from his collection have been exhibited at the Carnegie Museum of Art and the Frick Art Museum.
