Description
**Originally Listed At $300**
Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lwalwa (sometimes Lwalu, Balwalwa) peoples, ca. mid 20th century CE. A beautiful and hand-carved wooden face mask with a projecting chin, large lips, a triangular nose, slit-form eyes, a well-sculpted brow line, and protruding temples. A pair of incised horizontal lines frame the slender eyes, giving the face an almost squinting appearance. The smooth brow is separated into two even sections by a central ridge, and leads upwards to a carved hemispherical coiffure which displays several areas of incised diagonal motifs. A pair of perforations are situated on either side of the head, meant for attaching a large textile costume, and a perforation on top holds a small metal suspension wire. Covered in a lustrous dark-brown pigment and fabulous patina, this is a wonderful geometric-style example from Central Africa! Size: 8.25" W x 13" H (21 cm x 33 cm).
Provenance: private Eason Eige collection, Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA
