Western Africa, Nigeria, Ogoni peoples, ca. mid 20th century CE. A large, hand-carved wooden mask with slit-form eyes, bar-shaped ears with grooved notches, a broad nose, puckered lips, flush cheeks, and a smooth chin. The head is capped with a large incised coiffure, and the entire mask is painted in an espresso-hued pigment. The Ogoni people, living in the fertile land east of the Niger River Delta, have a long history of masquerading, despite the efforts of Christian missionaries to stop this activity. Masks are used in a wide variety of situations - entertainment, participation in rituals, and attending social events like funerals. Size: 6" W x 10.25" H (15.2 cm x 26 cm).

Condition
Age-commensurate surface wear and abrasions, fading to pigmentation, small losses to mouth, nose, ears, and coiffure, and minor inactive insect damage. Light earthen deposits throughout, and nice pigmentation remains still visible.
