Description
**Originally Listed At $500**
Native American, northern Pacific Northwest coast, probably Haida from Queen Charlotte Island, British Columbia, ca. early 20th century CE. A beautiful cedar box with twenty inlaid abalone buttons. The interior is painted bright red, while the exterior has red and black figures in outline forming the face and eyes of different sacred animals. Traditionally, wooden boxes like this one, similar to bentwood boxes (which were made of a single piece of wood bent into form rather than the four panels here), were used for storing and serving water and foodstuffs. Hot stones could be added to cook the contents. They are used throughout the Pacific Northwest, but the painted rather than carved examples are often made by the Haida people. Size: 16" L x 11" W x 9" H (40.6 cm x 27.9 cm x 22.9 cm)
Provenance: private Newport Beach, California, USA collection
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.
