1790 George Washington Manley Medal First Obverse Struck During His Lifetime As Featured In “100 Greatest American Medals and Tokens” PCGS Certified AU-53
1790 George Washington “Manly” Medal. First Obverse. Bronze. Baker-61B. PCGS graded About Uncirculated-53.
This rare historic 1790 George Washington “Manley” Medal is Ranked as number “17” in the beautiful reference book titled, “100 Greatest American Medals and Tokens”. It is one of the greatest medals in the field of Washingtonia. This medal was actually struck during George Washington's lifetime while he was President of the United States. This example is in very choice quality for a 1st Strike Obverse, PCGS graded About Uncirculated-53.
The dies were engraved by James Manley (active 1790–1800) made in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This example has rich deep chestnut surfaces with choice eye appeal to its sharply struck obverse. The reverse strike is typical for this medal in lacking sharpness of definition to the central reverse legends “as made” condition caused by the ultra-high relief designed Portrait of George Washington on the obverse. The planchet shows a few scattered tiny pinpricks in the reverse lower right field and it is otherwise as made. Its high rims are sharp without any bumps or bruises.
