Description
**First Time At Auction**
Ancient Egypt, Late Period, ca. 712 to 300 BCE. A cast bronze seated figure of a pharaoh with a dramatic conical crown with a long, draped, serpent-like item hanging from its brim. The figure is portrayed in classic Egyptian style, with arms down beside the legs, palms flat; the legs are similarly bent, the feet resting on an integrated square platform. This mode of portrayal, which can appear stiff and unnatural to modern eyes, echoed the Egyptian reasons for creating statuettes: they were made for tombs or temples, and it was important that the face should look straight ahead, towards the afterlife. These statuettes were intended to act as substitutes for the body should it be destroyed. A wonderful example of such a figure. Size: 0.8" W x 3.45" H (2 cm x 8.8 cm); 4.7" H (11.9 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private Ventura County, California, USA collection
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
