Description
Small-Sized Stoneware Jar with Combed Decoration, NY or NJ origin, 18th or early 19th century, narrow, cylindrical jar with footed base and flared rim, the upper body decorated with alternating bands of straight and wavy combed incising, the surface covered in a dark-brown glaze. Provenance: Purchased by the consignor decades ago from William Ketchum. Letter from Ketchum regarding jar from time of sale is included with this lot. Originally found in Rockland County, NY. A 1 3/8" rim chip, a 1" rim chip, and a 1 1/8" in-the-firing contact mark to rim. Two smooth, vertical in-the-firing contact marks near base. Jar is very slightly sunken on one side. A post-firing base chip, an in-the-firing base chip, and some in-the-firing clay residue to base. H 7 7/8".
