Description
Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Foliate Decoration, Northeastern U.S. origin, possibly New Jersey, early 19th century, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder and open loop handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an incised and cobalt-highlighted foliate design including dashes along the stem. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a fifty-year private collection. Y-shaped crack on underside, extending onto side of jar where it forms a spider crack. Shallow chipping to rim. A 1 1/8" piece of adhered clay to side of jar. A 1 3/8" in-the-firing chip to underside at edge. A small base chip and two in-the-firing stone pings to bottom edge. Some short, faint lines to surface, not visible on interior.
