Description
Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Drape-and-Tassel Decoration, New Jersey origin, circa 1830, ovoid, bowl-shaped jar with applied lug handles, profusely-decorated on one side with a spotted drape motif, embellished with two large tassels. Brushed cobalt highlights to front handle terminals. Possibly the most heavily-decorated piece of stoneware of this school that we have seen. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a fifty-year private collection. Large, restored inverted Y-shaped crack from rim on reverse. Three shorter restored cracks extending from base on reverse / side of jar. A short restored line extending from base on front of jar. Old, sticky residue to surface. A few minor rim chips and a minor firing flaw to rim on front.
