Description
Rare Miniature Stoneware Jar with Incised Floral Decoration, attributed to George Lent, Troy, NY, circa 1820, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, narrow collar, and large lug handles, decorated on the front with an incised and cobalt-highlighted flower blossom featuring striped details to the petals. Cobalt-highlighted, scalloped incising to handle terminal and heavy cobalt highlights over tops of handles. Shoulder and collar with cobalt spot decoration on front. Additional cobalt spots to collar on reverse. Exceptional size. The distinctive four-petaled flower blossom with incised dashes along the outer lobe of the petals is characteristic of the work of George Lent, while active in Troy, NY circa 1820. Dark salt residue to base and underside. A glazed-over iron ping to base area on front and reverse. An in-the-firing chip to one handle and minor in-the-firing contact mark along edge of same handle. A minor spot of wear to exterior of rim and two minor chips to interior of rim, one of which is glazed over. H 5".
