Description
Extremely Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "R. & B.C. MILLER", Trumbull County, OH origin, circa 1840, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, tall collar, and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a boldly-brushed cobalt tulip. Brushed cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Though examples bearing the marks, "B.C. MILLER", for Benjamin C. Miller, and "R. MILLER", for Reuben Miller, are known, this jar is the first example of stoneware that we have seen with a stamp indicating a partnership between the two. Heavy chipping to base. A small in-the-firing surface chip / contact mark to one handle.
