Description
Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Tree-of-Life Decoration, attributed to Stephen B. Sweeney, Henrico County, VA, circa 1838-1863, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and flared rim with interior flange to hold a lid, decorated on the front and reverse with a brushed and slip-trailed tree-of-life design. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. The design on this jar, based on Henry Lowndes' iconic tree-of-life motif, is indicative of the transfer of decorative styles within the James River potting community. The jar's flared-rim form with inner lid seat is unusual for this maker. One handle professionally-restored. An in-the-firing separation to interior rim and shoulder area, not visible on exterior. A few rim chips.
