Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Nazca culture, probably Phase 3 to 4, ca. 200 to 450 CE. A charming pottery vessel in the form of a bright bird that sits perkily at attention, its head up, its beak out, above a rounded body with a broad spray of multicolored tail feathers. Feet are painted on the curved underside of the body, providing a cute touch of naturalism. A narrow, conical spout with gently curved strap handle rises from the back of the body. During these phases of Nazca painting, known as the Monumental Strain, naturalistic representations of animals, especially birds like these - swallows, condors, and water birds, are common. Later, Nazca art became more abstract. Size: 5.5" W x 5.25" H (14 cm x 13.3 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection
