Item Details
Description
Uncommon World War I Era Service Flag or Son In Service Flag. Green, Red and Blue Flag with Gold and Blue applied stars. Service flags were designed during World War 1 for families or organizations to display in their window. Blue stars represent a child or member that is serving in the military, while gold stars represent a child or member that died while in service. Treadle machine sewn with straight stitch stripes, zig-zag stitch stars and brass grommets. This non-traditional example of a service flag has six gold stars applied to one side of the flag. There are four blue stars and two gold stars applied to the other side. The tonal quality of the star colors indicate to me that some were placed at different times. Some stars appear more soiled or faded. It is reasonable to conclude that one side was made earlier in the war while the other side was updated to reflect later deaths. The cotton stars are applied to a red wool stripe, while the other stripes are cotton fabric. Possibly this flag was made for a large/extended family, community or organization to represent their service members. Also at this time, local clubs with members of specific ethnic heritage were common. I can not say for sure if the background colors are to represent a community, organization, college or branches of the military. An intriguing flag with an untold story which collectors with military expertise may be able to solve. Approximate flag size is 34" x 24". Condition: soiling, staining, fold lines and wrinkles. top and bottom edges are machine selvaged. hemmed fly end. cotton hoist with metal grommets. Please see photos for additional condition review.
