Description
Pre-Columbian, Belize, Mayan Territories, Late Classic, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A handsome grey chert dagger, triangular in shape, with a short handle made to be lashed to something larger using sinew. This item was likely made solely for ceremonial use. Knapped chert tools are made using percussion technique (striking them with other stones), and the process required to get them the correct shape requires training and skill. Knapped chert made for sacrificial and ceremonial use by the Maya, are often found as offerings in caches inside of stone monuments and other architectural features. Size: 2.25" W x 8.5" H (5.7 cm x 21.6 cm)
