They believe that their founding ancestor was a crocodile who turned himself into a man and they therefore have no fear of these deadly creatures since they know they will never be attacked by a clan brother. The prows of dugout canoes were almost always decorated with a crocodile head like this one. They were, in fact, meant to appear as just another crocodile in the water. This piece is very special because there were aluminum plates attached in order to make a connection for a rope. These aluminum plates were made of (Japanese) crashed WW2 helicopters and airplanes in the jungle of Papua.
