Central Africa, Cameroon, Bamenda peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A nice, hand-carved wooden whistle with a body resembling an abstract anthropomorphic figure. The tone hole is decorated with a perforated, twin-lobed headdress presiding atop a featureless face wrapped with a small piece of leather. The neck has three integral rings carved into the shaft, and the lower body is represented by a flared triangular base with a pair of perforations. Covered in a lustrous red-brown patina, this is a wonderful example from Cameroon! Size: 9.375" H (23.8 cm).
Provenance: ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA acquired prior to 1970

Condition
Age-commensurate surface wear, small hairline fissures near tone hole and on neck area, with some small chips to body and neck. Fading to coloration and light inactive insect damage, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits throughout.
