Central Asian Bronze Axe Head - Stunning Patina
Central Asian Bronze Axe Head - Stunning Patina
Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $600**

Central Asia, Bronze Age, ca. 10th to 7th century BCE. A sturdy, cast-bronze axe head which derives elegance from its simplicity. The tool is comprised of a lengthy rectangular blade, a slightly-raised central ridge, a curved blade edge, a stocky shoulder, and an ovoid socketing shaft with a vertical crest along the butt end. The entire axe head is covered with stunning areas of russet and emerald hued patina, with areas of modern polishing visible along one side. The function of this example is likely not related to battle based on its overall form, but rather as a shaping tool or even as a burial offering. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 6.5" L x 2.2" H (16.5 cm x 5.6 cm); 6.125" H (15.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Ancient Central Asia was a significant cultural crossroads due to its natural geography and established trade routes. People indigenous to the area were under almost constant influence by ancient Iranian civilizations in the west as well as the Indus Valley civilizations, like Harappa, in the east. However, the indigenous peoples were as well able to assert their cultural influence onto those with whom trade and commerce were abundant. Central Asian peoples also kept true to a distinctive style of bronze-work, effectively eliminating the necessity to rely on outside populations for tools and weaponry. High-quality materials, uncomplicated designs, and expert craftsmanship culminated in an efficacious display of bronze-smithing prowess.
